Late Spring Seedlings 2016

Gorgeous sunny day, warm sun, cool breeze after cool week. Evenings during the week, including today feature Easterly winds bringing sea mist across the mountains. Didn’t grow plants from seeds this year due to lack of time, prolonged cold weather and frosts. Stopped by Bunnings today to get new timers and connectors, picked up seedlings as well.

Bed 1

  • PLANTED – Cucumbers (Lebanese) x 2
  • PLANTED – Tomatoes (Grosse Lisse) x 2
  • PLANTED – Tomatoes (Sweetbite) x 2
  • PLANTED – Tomatoes (Roma) x 2
  • PLANTED – Tomato (Rapunzel – Cherry Tomato) x 1
  • PLANTED – Tomato (Random – From Dan) x 1

Bed 2

  • PLANTED – Zucchini (Black Jack) x 2
  • Coriander – gone to flower
  • Garlic – Needs to be harvested next week
  • Potatoes have popped up in the bed

Bed 3

  • PLANTED – Cucumbers (Lebanese)
  • PLANTED – Chilli (Jalepeno) x 8

Bed 4

  • Green manure pulled out of right 1/4 of the bed
  • PLANTED – Cucumbers (Lebanese)

Berry Patch

  • A – Blackberries x 2 and Boysenberry x 1 in leaf with a few green berries
  • B – Raspberries x 3 in leaf with a few green berries
  • C – Raspberries x 3 in leaf with a few green berries
  • Need to plant ground cover to smother weeds

Bed 5

  • 3 sisters patch becoming overgrown with grass, weeds and flowering kale
  • Need to clear next week and plant corn and pumpkin

Food Forest

  • Apple (Granny Smith) – flowers have been knocked off and there are no fruit
  • Pear (Packham) – flowers have been knocked off and there are no fruit, recovering well from pruning given by dog last year
  • Nectarine (May Grand) – Severely affected by leaf curl and frost in October, new leaf regrowth mostly healthy with some leaf curl
  • Apple (Pink Lady) – flowers have been knocked off and there are no fruit
  • Nectarine (Dwarf Root Stock) – Severely affected by leaf curl and frost in October, new leaf regrowth mostly healthy with some leaf curl
  • Cherry (Bing) – Leaves speckled with cherry slug damage, reasonably healthy, sap spots on branches and some ants noticed
  • Pear (Williams) – Very healthy growth but no fruit
  • Red Currant – fruit green and sparse
  • Understory – grass is overtaking the mint, some strawberry is flowering and fruiting, comfrey flowering

Chook Pen

  • Plum (Mariposa) – Has grown large, leaves badly affected by leaf curl, regrowth green but some affected by leaf curl
  • Apple (Pink Lady) – Lots of growth, very large, green and healthy but no fruit
  • Cherry (Van) – Some slug damage on leaves, new growth but structure of tree is scraggly
  • Plum (Satsuma) – Very healthy and strong growth

On Friday, David went to Monster’s and spent the day smoking 6 hams and 6 slabs of bacon. The hams were vac packed on Saturday. Bacon is waiting in the fridge until next weekend to be sliced and vac packed.
